What Is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a completely normal human response to stress, uncertainty, or potential danger. It helps us stay alert and respond to threats. But sometimes, those fight-or-flight signals get stuck in the “on” position even when there’s no clear reason.

If your anxiety feels constant, overwhelming, or difficult to manage, it may be part of an anxiety disorder. Unlike everyday worry, anxiety disorders can interfere with sleep, relationships, work, or your ability to enjoy life. More than 3 million adults in the U.S. experience anxiety disorders each year and many more struggle silently without realizing help is available.

Is It Stress or Something More?

Anxiety can cause both physical and emotional symptoms, sometimes so intense that they mimic a medical emergency. When left untreated, it can lead to panic attacks or a persistent sense of dread that interferes with everyday functioning.

Wondering if your anxiety may be more than stress? Ask yourself:

  • Does your anxiety show up randomly or in specific situations?

  • Does your emotional response match the actual threat?

  • Do you continue to worry even after a situation is resolved?

  • Are your fears grounded in reality, or do they involve worst-case scenarios?

  • Does your anxiety impact your ability to focus, sleep, or manage daily tasks?

\

  • Do you avoid places, people, or situations to avoid feeling anxious?

If you answered “yes” to several of these questions, it may be time to seek support from a mental health provider.

What Does Anxiety Feel Like?

Everyone experiences anxiety differently, but common symptoms include:

  • Feeling tense, restless, or on edge

  • Racing heart, shortness of breath, or chest tightness

  • Nausea, dizziness, or digestive discomfort

  • Trouble sleeping or staying asleep

  • Difficulty concentrating or feeling mentally “foggy”

  • Fatigue or exhaustion

  • Irritability or emotional overwhelm

  • Withdrawing from others or avoiding certain situations

For many people, anxiety is both unpredictable and consuming. It’s more than a passing worry. It can feel like an internal hijacking, making you feel disconnected from your usual self. And because anxiety often doesn’t show outwardly, it can be hard for others to understand how much you're struggling.

What Causes Anxiety?

Anxiety doesn’t come from a single source, it’s shaped by a combination of experiences, genetics, biology, and lifestyle. At Daylight Healing, we take a holistic approach to uncovering the root causes of anxiety so we can create an effective, personalized treatment plan.

Possible contributing factors include:

Life Experiences

Stressful events like job loss, divorce, or moving (especially when compounded by childhood trauma) can contribute to anxiety. These experiences may shape how we respond to future challenges.

Childhood Trauma

Neglect, abuse, or instability during formative years can leave long-lasting imprints, making it harder to feel safe and secure as an adult.

Chronic Stress

Ongoing pressures from work, finances, caregiving, or academic demands can create a constant state of overwhelm that fuels anxiety.

Medication Side Effects

Certain medications, including some used for colds, blood pressure, or weight loss, may trigger anxiety-like symptoms. Always review side effects with a healthcare provider.

Medical Conditions

Conditions such as thyroid disorders, heart disease, diabetes, respiratory illness, and chronic pain can contribute to or mimic anxiety symptoms.

Genetic Factors

Anxiety often runs in families. If you have close relatives with anxiety or other mental health conditions, you may be more vulnerable to developing it yourself.

Brain Chemistry

Imbalances in neurotransmitters (like serotonin and GABA) or brain regions involved in emotion regulation may play a key role in anxiety symptoms.

Lifestyle Habits

A lack of sleep, poor nutrition, lack of exercise, caffeine use, alcohol or substance use can all amplify anxiety or make it harder to recover from.

What Does Anxiety Feel Like?

Untreated anxiety can impact every area of your life, relationships, work performance, and your ability to enjoy things you used to love. It often leads to avoidance, isolation, or shame, making it harder to ask for help. Over time, this cycle can take a toll on your emotional and physical health.

But the good news is: anxiety is treatable. And you don’t have to face it alone.
