What Is Depression?

Depression is more than just feeling sad or having a rough week. It's a medical condition that affects the way you think, feel, and function. It can make everyday tasks feel overwhelming, drain your energy, and dull your sense of connection to the people and things you care about. For many, it feels like walking through life with a heavy weight that won't lift.

While depression can be triggered by life events, stress, or trauma, it can also arise without a clear cause. It's influenced by a mix of biological, psychological, and environmental factors, and it's treatable. With the right support, most people find relief and begin to feel like themselves again.

How Does Depression Feel?

Depression can touch every part of your life, your energy, motivation, relationships, work, and the way you see yourself. It can make it hard to get out of bed, return texts,  or feel joy in things you once loved. Over time, depression may lead to withdrawal, self-criticism, irritability, or a sense of hopelessness that makes it even harder to reach out for support.

You might be noticing:

  • Difficulty concentrating or remembering things.

  • Loss of interest in things you used to enjoy.

  • Fatigue or lack of energy, even after resting.

  • Changes in sleep or appetite.

  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, feeling like a burden, or self-blame.

  • Thoughts that life isn't worth living.

Whether your symptoms are new or something you've lived with for years, we're here to help you find your way forward. Depression is treatable, and you don't have to go through it alone.

What Causes Depression?

Depression doesn't have one single cause. It's often the result of a combination of factors that interact in complex ways. These can include genetics, changes in brain chemistry, hormonal shirts, chronic stress, medical conditions, trauma, or major life transitions. Sometimes it develops after a difficult event. Other times, it seems to appear without warning.

Everyone's experience is different. Some people have a family history of depression, while others may have never felt this way before. No matter the cause, depression is real, valid, and deserving of care. Understanding what's contributing to your symptoms is an important step in creating a treatment plan that actually works for your brain, your body, your life.
